Travelling with your pets is rarely as effortless and glamorous as social media may suggest. Behind every charming beach photograph or cosy hotel snapshot is usually a great deal of planning, patience, and preparation. At least, that is certainly the case for us.
When we travel with our girls, their comfort and safety come first. A successful trip begins long before the car engine starts. The evening before a long journey, we give them a generous meal first, followed by a proper walk afterwards so they feel settled, comfortable, and ready for a restful night before travel. Hydration is equally important, and if plain water does not appeal to them, we encourage drinking with something more enticing such as bone broth.
On the morning of departure, they are taken out again for a shorter walk so they can empty their bladder and bowels before the drive begins. It may seem like a small detail, but these thoughtful routines make travelling far smoother for both dogs and humans.
Inside the car, we carefully prepare their space. First, we fit a dog seat cover. Their own bed is then placed on top, giving them something familiar and comfortable to settle into. Over the bed, we add an additional cloth layer. Should there be an accident during the journey, the top cloth can be removed quickly while their bed remains clean and dry for the remainder of the trip. Practicality and comfort must always go hand in hand.
Our girls are excellent travellers and have completed journeys of up to eight hours with remarkable grace. Naturally, we stop when needed for toilet breaks, fresh air, water, and a few carefully timed snacks. Dehydrated chicken and biscuits are usually well received. According to Mango, however, every stop should involve snacks, and every snack should belong to her.
We travel with what can only be described as a small mobile household. Towels, bowls, leads, toys, cooling water, food, treats, life jackets for coastal holidays, and a full medical kit all come with us. We also carry practical essentials such as saline, ear drops, eye drops, wound care supplies, and other items appropriate for minor concerns while away from home.
This preparation does not come from guesswork. Because my life revolves around dogs, I have taken the time to educate myself through canine nutrition and veterinary-related study so that I can be a more responsible pet parent. It is easy to blame a professional when something goes wrong; it is wiser to learn how to prevent avoidable problems in the first place.
Safety is equally important. Our girls travel in secure harnesses, and emergency contact details are always attached. If the unexpected happens, they are never without identification or support.
Travelling with pets can be joyful, memorable, and deeply rewarding, but it is never effortless. It requires forethought, patience, and genuine care. The beautiful moments people see are often made possible by all the unseen work behind them.
