A Hotel or Villa Is Not Your Doggy’s Home

One of the biggest problems faced by pet-friendly accommodation in Sri Lanka is that some people do not understand the difference between how their doggy lives at home and how their doggy must be managed at somebody else’s property.

At home, your doggy may sleep on your bed, walk around without a collar and follow their own routine. That is completely fine—it is their home. A hotel or villa is not their home. You are a guest, and you are responsible for respecting the property, its staff, its rules and the guests who will come after you.

Do not use the property’s human towels on your doggy. Do not allow wet, muddy or sandy paws onto clean sheets. If your doggy has an accident or damages something, tell the owner immediately. Do not leave without saying anything and expect somebody else to discover it and deal with it later.

And please do not say, “My doggy is well-behaved,” as though that means the rules do not apply. A well-behaved doggy can still have an accident. A responsible human prepares for it, manages it properly and tells the truth when something happens.

These are not harmless little mistakes. I have helped properties create pet policies and have still seen guests ignore them. The owners are left with damaged items, hygiene problems and additional work. After enough bad experiences, a property may decide that welcoming doggies is simply not worth it.

All doggies are good doggies. Their humans are responsible for how they are managed.

Being Prepared Is Part of Being Responsible

Travelling with dogs in Sri Lanka requires proper preparation. “It is okay just this once” is not an excuse.

Whenever we travel with Lisa and Mango, we follow a checklist. For a three-day stay, we take two doggy towels per day. That means six towels, plus one extra for good measure. We also take their own beds, food, bowls, leads, medicine, wet wipes, cleaning supplies and everything else they may need.

The list may look excessive, but your doggy’s belongings must travel with them. A hotel or villa should not have to provide their essentials or clean up problems you could have prevented.

If carrying everything your doggy needs feels like too much work, the honest truth is that you may not be ready to travel with your doggy yet.

Reassure the Property Before Booking

Whether you are contacting dog-friendly hotels in Sri Lanka or private pet-friendly villas in Sri Lanka, do not make a booking, pay for it and only then announce that you are bringing a dog.

Contact the property first through WhatsApp, email or telephone. Introduce your doggy honestly, explain their size, behaviour and travel experience, and ask for the current pet policy.

We tell owners that Lisa and Mango are experienced travellers, share photographs or videos from previous stays and confirm that we will bring their own beds, towels, food and supplies. Our girls have travelled many times, but we still never assume an owner should automatically trust us.

We also take a short video of the property when we arrive and another before leaving. This gives us and the owner a clear record of its condition. I have even shared videos from previous stays with new properties so they can see how responsibly we travel.

Being allowed to bring your doggy is not something you are automatically entitled to. Give the owner a genuine reason to feel comfortable welcoming you.

Choose a Place That Suits Your Doggy

Not every pet-friendly property will suit every doggy. Some have resident doggies, monkeys, cows or other animals. Some are unfenced. Others accept only small doggies or require a private room away from other guests.

Be honest about your doggy. If they are reactive, likely to wander, uncomfortable around other animals or unable to settle quietly, choose accordingly. Do not hide information simply because you want the booking.
